The New York City Marathon is organized by the New York Road Runners Club (NYRR), a not-for-profit organization that promotes running and fitness through a variety of programs and events for both professional and amateur athletes.

The NYRR was founded in 1958 by a group of runners who wanted to bring the sport of running to the people of New York City.

The New York City Marathon is an annual 26.2-mile (42.2 km) race that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world, with over 50,000 finishers in 2016. The event is organized by New York Road Runners and has been held every year since 1970.

Today, the NYRR has more than 60,000 members and hosts more than 150 running events each year, including the world-famous New York City Marathon.
